A new Rikers Island video series has launched, created by the Echoes of Incarceration project that meets at 15 Rutherford Place

There are SOOO many reasons to close Rikers Island, but don’t worry, we made a series of videos breaking them all down, and even made them fun to watch.
We’re excited to announce that the first three episodes from our collaboration with the Independent Rikers Commission are now out, and the release got covered by City and State.
Starting during our 2025 summer camp, we set out to create an engaging series of videos to remind and re-inspire the city to finish the work of closing the notorious and deadly jail complex.
The production team – which included youth who had been incarcerated at Rikers – hit the streets quizzing ordinary New Yorkers what they knew about the plan, and interviewed a former judge and prosecutor, a former corrections officer, some amazing nonprofit leaders, and many fellow youth who had spent time on Rikers.
We’ve gotten an amazing, enthusiastic reaction to the first three videos and we’re exciting to continue releasing the films over the next month. Stay tuned!
