Staten Island Meeting
You're invited to join the small and mighty Staten Island Meeting for worship!

Upcoming Events
Dear Friends,
We look forward to seeing anyone who can make it to the beach on Sunday. There will also be a Zoom cohort, for those who cannot.attend in person (visit https://statenislandquakers.org/contact/ to request link). Re swimming -- air and water temperatures for this Sunday are both forecast to be in the 50s -- too cold for swimming for most people; but the nice thing about it is that the beach will be less crowded than on more summery days -- thus making for a nice peaceful atmosphere for meeting.
Sunday -- May 4 -- Meeting for worship begins at 10:10 am, scheduled to run 45 minutes. Social time to follow with a children’s story (we will take turns reading it) and/or worship sharing.
In two weeks, May 18, Meeting will be at ETG Book Cafe in Tompkinsville. Same schedule but with a Meeting for Worship with a Concern for Business to be added to our activities (ending by 12:15, 12:30 at the latest).
Summary Directions to the beach -- Meeting about 0.23 miles (400 yards) NE’ly from the end of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk. At that location, you will find 3 large pieces of driftwood next to each other (the longest about 12 ft long) lying more or less parallel to the shoreline. It makes for a really nice seating area, one that may also be attractive to other beach goers; ie, if you see people sitting there who don’t look quite frumpy/friendly enough to be Quakers, just look around a bit; we may have opted for a bit of open sand.
Specific Directions
By car:
From South Beach parking lot (the most NE’ly lot at South Beach) Just SE/o the corner of Ocean Ave & Drury. Permanent well-maintained restrooms are 300 yds WSW of the parking lot.
Walking directions to meeting place
Starting from the end of the Boardwalk, walk NE'ly along the bikeway/walkway 132 yds to Fort Wadsworth Sign.
Walking directions from the Fort Wadsworth sign:
Continue walking N’ly along the bikeway/walkway as it curves left, for 106 yds until the bikeway/walkway ends at USS N Carolina Rd. Turn right and walk NE’ly along USS N Carolina Rd 194 yards to a path on your right, leading through the woods to the beach.
The trailhead isn’t marked, but it’s open enough to be an obvious path.
(Note: If you reach USS Tennessee Ave, you've overshot the path by 155 yards. Walk back along USS N. Carolina Rd and look for the trailhead on your left.)
You'll know you've gotten the right path if you see a tree with gnarly roots across the street.
Walk 53 yds along the path through the woods to the beach. When you reach the sand, look for 3 large pieces of driftwood next to each other (the longest about 12 ft long), lying more or less parallel to the shoreline.
By bus:
Take S51 to Father Capodanno Blvd @ Robin Rd. Walk SE’ly -- toward the beach -- on Ocean Ave. Turn left onto walkway/bikeway near the boardwalk and walk about 132 yds to Fort Wadsworth Sign. Then see walking directions (above), starting from the sign.
Or S53 to McClean @ Ocean Ave (or, if coming from Brooklyn, to McClean @ Lilly Pond Ave and walk W’ly half a block to Ocean Ave). Walk SE’ly on Ocean Ave to Father Capodanno Blvd, then follow the walking directions immediately above under S51.
By bicycle:
If you’re coming from Brooklyn, note that there are bike racks on S53 buses. There are bike racks near the South Beach parking lot (as identified above), as well as other stationary objects (like sign posts) suitable for locking with a cable lock or chain. Or you can just follow the walking directions given above and chain or cable-lock your bike to one of the light standards near the tree with gnarly roots (referenced above) or just take your bike to the meeting site, though I don’t especially recommend that, since the wind can blow sand into your drive train. Locking your bike to a tree is not recommended.

Children are invited to participate in worship.
Meeting for Worship is not necessarily completely silent. Participants may be moved by the spirit to respectfully share vocal ministry. That includes you, even when it’s your first meeting; but please note that vocal ministry is not a sermon nor a debate, nor is it idle chatter. It’s only the concise expression of “that of God within.” It is customary for an individual to speak no more than once during a single Meeting for Worship.
You will know Meeting for Worship is in session if no one verbally greets you when you enter. That does not mean you are not welcome. You are welcome! During the winter we meet at Every Thing Goes Book Cafe (“ETG“). In warmer months, we alternate between ETG and the beach. For more specifics please click CONTACT.
