Meeting for Worship is not necessarily completely silent. Participants may be moved by the spirit to respectfully share vocal ministry. That includes you, even when it’s your first meeting; but please note that vocal ministry is not a sermon nor a debate, nor is it idle chatter. It’s only the concise expression of “that of God within.” It is customary for an individual to speak no more than once during a single Meeting for Worship.
You will know Meeting for Worship is in session if no one verbally greets you when you enter. That does not mean you are not welcome. You are welcome! Meetings sometimes take place at the Every Thing Goes Book Cafe (“ETG“) and, in warmer months, the beach. For upcoming dates and locations please click CONTACT.
Staten Island Friends Answer Questions About Their Meeting, May 2026
What do you like about Quaker Meeting?
Clyde (age 10): I like that there are not any distractions at St. Mary’s but also that it’s a place where I calm down.
Eleanor (adult): The best thing about going to Quaker Meeting is to reconnect to our source light. I could do that by myself and I do, but sharing the light is the main thing.
Hugh (adult): I like that we meet at the ETG Bookstore/Cafe, where they make excellent hot cider. It is easily accessible to me on my bicycle. The meeting is quiet and peaceful, where one can reflect and evaluate.
Sylvie (age 7): I like that you can close your eyes and have a calming time there.
Ted (adult): I like coming and going by bicycle. I stress over prep, especially on business meeting days, and getting there on my bike – for that 20 minutes or so – takes me out of all that and is a wonderful preview to getting into the spirit of Meeting for Worship.
What is unique about the meeting?
Abigail (age 13): The Staten Island meeting is special because it’s a small group where everyone knows each other. The ratio of kids to adults is high (almost half to half). It’s also very local - everyone in the meeting has a job (duties) to the meeting. In addition, we have unique beach meetings where you swim and become one with nature.
Clyde (age 10): What is unique is that it’s when you don’t have to do anything, just clear your mind.
Eleanor (adult): Staten Island Meeting is uniquely small. The shared light is so powerful – a great place to grow from and I’m grateful.
Hugh (adult): It is on Staten Island, and we are very lucky to have Ted Lochwin as Clerk, who keeps a very concise schedule and is certain to keep everybody informed. We have meetings in a variety of places, from the beautiful, uncrowded, and exceptionally clean beaches in Staten Island to the ETG Bookstore and a church that I haven't yet discovered.
Kai (age 7): It’s unique because I like the bookstore location where they have a chess set. When it’s at the church, we go in the afternoon instead of morning (unlike everyone else). My favorite is the beach meeting where I get to play in the water. Oh, I also like to see my friend, Clyde, there, of course. One time, he brought a surf-guy toy to the beach and he let me throw it. It really looked like that toy guy was surfing.
Sylvie (age 7): Meeting is unique because you get to read a calming book, or have a calming time to just close your eyes. Picture down below.
Ted (adult): At present we are rotating among 3 different locations – which is kind of crazy – but in the world of Staten Island Meeting there is a certain logic to it.
