Community Wellness Newsletter for September 2026
A newsletter from our wellness partners at University Settlement. This month: scheduled changes to Medicaid, SCRIE/DRIE, and Community Wellness Day on Oc. 8.
Hi Friends,
I can’t believe summer is officially behind us and that we’re already well into the fall season.
We have a few important updates regarding Medicaid and SCRIE/DRIE:
Some Medicaid changes took effect on July 1, and additional changes are scheduled to become effective on January 1, 2027. If you have received letters from HRA and are unsure what they mean or how these changes may affect you, please reach out to the Community Wellness Initiative (communitywellness@nycquakers.org). We would be happy to help you understand the information and discuss any potential implications.
Regarding SCRIE/DRIE, which provides rent increase exemptions for eligible older adults and people with disabilities, New York State raised the income eligibility limit earlier this year from $50,000 to $75,000. However, the New York City Council must still pass an amendment before these changes can be implemented in New York City. If you have recently become eligible because your income exceeds $50,000 and you meet the other eligibility requirements, please contact us. We can provide additional information and discuss the best timing and strategy for applying.
On Thursday, October 8 at 11:00 a.m., we will be at the Brooklyn Meeting House to share information about health insurance, housing resources, and SNAP (formerly known as food stamps). We hope to see you there. If you have any questions, please contact the Community Wellness Initiative at communitywellness@nycquakers.org.
Wishing you a healthy, relaxing, and enjoyable fall season.
Warmly,
Community Wellness Initiative Team
