Social Justice

Quaker beliefs in simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and stewardship — the SPICES — lead us to take action, to "live our faith out loud."

Quakers and Social Justice

Quakers have been prominent social justice activists for centuries. This work continues today. Friends believe in the equal value of all people, as Jesus demonstrated in his teachings.

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. – Galatians 3:28 (KJV)

Quakers believe that everyone has “that of God” within them. Every person has worth and deserves respect and understanding. This is our testimony of equality. Our belief in integrity leads us to act when we see oppression and inequality. We care for all of humanity and we act accordingly.

NYC Quakers are actively involved in:

  • Earthcare — ecological justice and stewardship of the earth.
  • Equality — belonging, inclusion, equity, and community. Includes racial justice, immigration, the prison system, and LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance.
  • Peace — anti-violence and anti-war.
