Report from the 2026 NYC Quakers Retreat
55 Friends from all over New York City spent the weekend exploring the many forms of ministry and connecting over meals, walks, songs, games, and conversations.
55 Friends gathered for the 3rd annual NYC Quakers retreat at Powell House this past weekend, September 18-20, 2026. The schedule had a nice balance of programming and free time. Sessions focused on ministry: what it is, how we practice it, what it looks like in community, and what gifts in ministry we may have ourselves. See below for the list of gifts we considered.
NYC Quakers have a depth of experience and knowledge to draw upon. Experienced facilitator and public minister Luisa led the Saturday morning sessions that introduced us to the concept of ministry and the many forms it can take. During a community-led session wise NYC Friends offered workshops on the Bible, the Quran, on programmed meetings, and a worship sharing group on pastoral care. Beth performed a "Faith and Play" story for all ages about Friends' gifts.
Between sessions, we took care of ourselves and got to know each other. This care and connection took different forms, like hiking in the woods, worshiping by the pond, playing board games, taking naps, and chatting on the patio. A group of Friends hiked up to Dorson’s Rock. The kids read books to each other, played ping pong and basketball, spun around in circles, and built cushion forts. In the evening, we built a campfire, made graham-cracker-less s'mores, and played Balderdash.
Friends told us how they enjoyed the retreat on their evaluations:
"Getting to meet so many new people in my community was really lovely. I feel much more connected to the New York community writ large."
"Being with familiar and new Friends of all ages, being surrounded by gentleness and care, and enjoying generous silence refreshed me."
"I learned and absorbed a lot more about Quakerism. I understand the community aspect of Quakerism a lot better."
"Such a beautiful place with many beautiful spirits."
When asked to describe the retreat in one word, Friends said: Connected. Deepening. Nurturing. Cozy. Refreshing. Well-done. Light-filled. Peaceful. Light-filled. Nourishing. Lively. Gathered.
