Quaker Affiliations and Organizations

NYC Quakers are affiliated with organizations that host, nurture, educate, and represent Quakers and our beliefs.

Penington Friends House

The Penington is part of the NYC Quaker community. A multigenerational, collaborative residence run by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) for Quakers and friendly people, it has offered short term guest rooms and long term accommodations since 1897.

Quakers founded and continue to advise and be in relationship with these NYC schools.

Brooklyn Friends School

Established by the Religious Society of Friends in 1867, Brooklyn Friends School is now an independent entity that teaches students a college preparatory program based in Quaker tradition.

Mary McDowell Friends School

Also founded by Brooklyn Friends, Mary McDowell Friends School teaches students with learning disabilities. It is named for a member of the Brooklyn Meeting, a long-time educator. Opened in 1984 with a class of 5 students, the first class of seniors graduated in 2014.

Friends Seminary

Friends Seminary educates students from kindergarten through twelfth grade, adhering to the values of the Religious Society of Friends. We strive to build a diverse school where students exercise their curiosity and imagination as they develop as scholars, artists and athletes.

NYC Quakers are Affiliated With These Organizations

New York Yearly Meeting (NYYM)

The organization and association of the Quaker meetings (congregations) in New York State and parts of Connecticut and New Jersey. Friends and meetings in NYYM spiritually support each other, create community together, and connect to do things (like serve on committees) that require a larger base of Friends. NYYM meets once a year in the summer for a week-long general gathering and also in the fall and spring for a shorter gathering.

Powell House

The conference and retreat center of New York Yearly Meeting. Powell House offers adult, youth, and intergenerational conferences throughout the year.

Friends General Conference (FGC)

Friends General Conference is an association of mostly liberal yearly and local meetings in the US and Canada that organizes a yearly nation-wide gathering of Friends. New York Yearly Meeting, of which New York Quarter is a part, is a member of Friends General Conference. FGC provides spiritual nurture to Friends through their many programs and resources, such as online worship groups and materials to help meetings become anti-racism faith communities. They also run a Quaker bookstore at quakerbooks.org.

Friends United Meeting (FUM)

Friends United Meeting is an international association of generally Christ-centered Quakers and yearly meetings. New York Yearly Meeting, of which New York Quarter is a part, is a member of Friends United Meeting. FUM includes Friends churches and yearly meetings through North America and the Caribbean, in the Middle East, and in Africa, as well as the Ramallah Friends School in Palestine. FUM offers programs and events relating to spiritual formation and empowerment. A Triennial gathering is held for associated Friends and Friend groups.

Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC)

The Friends World Committee for Consultation encourages fellowship and understanding among all the branches of the Religious Society of Friends. FWCC brings Quakers together in multiple ways to celebrate God in our lives, to gather the Quaker voice, build networks to address issues of our time, and to unite Friends within our diversity. NYC Quakers are part of the FWCC Section of the Americas.

American Friends Service Committee (AFSC)

AFSC was founded in 1917 to create alternatives to military service during the first world war. Today AFSC works with communities worldwide to challenge injustice and build conditions for lasting peace.

Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL)

Since 1943, the FCNL community has lobbied Congress to advance peace and justice. FCNL’s work includes many of the issues of concern to Friends, from military spending and racial equality to a more peaceful foreign policy and a healthy environment.

Quaker United Nations Office

QUNO is a Quaker presence at the United Nations, representing Friends’ concerns for global peace and justice to the international community. QUNO maintains houses in Geneva and New York to serve as QUNO offices and meeting places close to the UN where diplomats, staff, and nongovernmental partners can work on difficult issues in a quiet, off-the-record atmosphere out of the public eye.
