Volunteers Needed to Support #FreedomWalk2026 Walkers May 18-26
May 18-26, Friends are needed to stay over at Brooklyn Meetinghouse with the Freedom Walkers, Southern Friends walking to commemorate the Underground Railroad.
To honor the Underground Railroad, Southern Friends are walking to Brooklyn.
They don’t need your couch, but they do need your presence.
#FreedomWalk2026 is a 750-mile commemorative walk from May 4th to July 4th, 2026, tracing the Underground Railroad from Sandy Spring Friends Meeting in Maryland to Toronto Friends House in Canada. Up to twelve walkers will be led by historian Anthony Cohen.
The walkers have requested lodging in Brooklyn Monday, May 18 to Tuesday, May 26. They will be overnighting in the Brooklyn Meetinghouse, a simple solution to the problem of finding housing in New York.
To do this, we need two f/Friends from BMM or the Quarter to stay in the Meetinghouse for:
- an afternoon shift from 3pm to 9pm,
- OR an overnight shift from 9pm to 9am.
That means four f/Friends each day for eight days. Please sign up using this Google form: https://forms.gle/ckQz2jBpJmw4yJ966. You’ll receive an orientation for your Meetinghouse stay.
These Friends will have minimal impact on meeting activities. They will put the meeting room to rights by 8:30 a.m. every morning. They will shower at a nearby gym, and be out most days. They will generally cook for themselves. We ask that you greet them in the spirit of Love.
