Community Wellness Newsletter for August 2026
NYQ Quaker's wellness parters at University Settlement share information on cooling centers, health insurance changes, and letters regarding SNAP benefits.
Hi Friends,
I hope the summer is treating you well. We have had some extremely hot days the past month. Please keep in mind that New York City provides cooling centers during periods of extreme heat. These air-conditioned facilities are open to anyone who needs a place to cool off and rest. Cooling centers are often located in schools, libraries, community centers, and other public buildings. You can find a cooling center near you by visiting: https://finder.nyc.gov/coolingcenters/locations.
Many of you have heard about the changes in health insurance due to HR1. Many people who previously received health insurance through market place has heard changes as of July 1st. If you are looking for someone to help go through the details and brainstorm next steps upon receiving the letter informing you of changes to your health insurance, please reach out to the Community Wellness Initiative at communitywellness@nycquakers.org.
We have also heard about confusing letters that people have received from HRA regarding their SNAP (food stamps) benefits. If you are one of them and are looking for someone to help tackle the message, please reach out to the same email address: communitywellness@nycquakers.org.
Wishing you a safe, healthy, and cool summer!
