Making Affordable Homes in NYC Today
The Human Right to Housing: Making Affordable Homes in NYC Today. A Microconference With Builders and Activists.
Sunday, May 31st, 1:00–4:00 PM (Lunch included), at 15 Rutherford Place, New York, NY. Free Community Event. RSVP here.
As of early 2026, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has pledged to build 200,000 new units of affordable, rent-stabilized, union-built housing over the next 10 years, aiming to triple current city-financed production.
Our microconference brings together activists, academics, builders, tenants, and organizers to discuss how expanded affordable housing production can be made feasible in practice.
Topics include:
- Financing and public investment
- Union labor and construction capacity
- Zoning and regulatory barriers
- Public land strategy
- Cost control and scalable models
The goal is practical collaboration: identifying strategies that translate policy commitments into completed housing.
Co-Hosted by Sander Hicks and Sophie Gonick, Ph.D.
