Earthchxrch with The Luddites
A special Earthchxrch for and with The Luddites, to honor their human revolution and our shared reclamation of the wild, liberated spirit of the future!
From the Church of Stop Shopping:
In the early days at Earthchxrch, as we embarked on that wonderful experiment at the old bank on Avenue C, adjunct professors and students at the New School started a 25 day strike, the longest part time strike in US history.
The New School, once known as “The University of Exile”, was a sanctuary for European teachers and thinkers, Claude Levi-Strauss and Hannah Arendt and W. E. B. Du Bois among them. As theater people, we greatly revered the Drama Workshop, where Erwin Piscator, the important German director, taught Marlon Brando, Harry Belafonte, Eli Wallach…. But in 2022 the students were rising up and they invited us to perform for them on their picket line, which we gladly did.
Right away a breakaway group of students known as COMMUNIVERSITY were meeting at Earthchxrch, and then mounting shows and various “de-alienation” rituals there, Lamp Club, S.H.I.T. Phone, these were young people trying to reclaim their imaginations, their relationships, and finding compelling ways to occupy public space. They are just one group in a growing body of (mostly) young people who are taking on tech in vivid and intimate ways all over the world. June 28-July 5 they are hosting Summer Of Ludd (SOL) in New York City, hundreds of self proclaimed Luddites are converging in NYC for a week of events and activations. Their spectacular antics are so fresh! They are a whole new generation of opposition to the mono culture and they inspire us.
On Wednesday July 1 at 7 PM at the halfway point of SOL we’ll have a special Earthchxrch for and with The Luddites, to honor their human revolution and our shared reclamation of the wild, liberated spirit of the future! Join us.
