Concern for Quaker Living (CQL) Working Group Meeting

Concern for Quaker Living (CQL) helps our meetings to welcome and nurture a caring community of Friends in all stages of life, particularly the oldest Friends.

Working group meetings begin with worship sharing on a query followed by personal check-ins. Everyone is invited to come worship and connect with other Friends. The reading for October 12:

The following is an excerpt from the current issue of Befriending Creation, in an article, "Answering the Fire by Sowing the Seeds," by Allen J. McGrew.  I hope you find it thoughtful:

Seeds have deep resonance in Judeo-Christian scripture, Quaker faith, and the living testimony of the natural world. Tiny packages of dense wisdom and stored energy protected by robust shells, seeds embody faith, hope, persistence, and endurance through times of great stress, such as fire, winter, or drought. We live in such times. Earth is burning. With their tiny size and their down-sinking into soil, seeds also embody humility, silent waiting, and patient confidence in an eventual bursting sunward, rooted in the discovery within the Earth itself of the nutrients and water needed to sustain a season of new growth. Finally, in their small forms, seeds embed the dense instruction necessary to build a sprawling plant, as in the parable of the mustard seed. All these conditions are needed to redeem the human relationship with Earth, and to ground it in healthy mutualistic abundance.

Some questions:

  • How do our daily habits effect the natural world?
  • How can we express our gratitude for all of nature's gifts, from the food we eat to a quiet morning walk?

The Concern for Quaker Living (CQL) working group of New York Quarterly Meeting is focused in three threads: a housing feasibility study, the Community Wellness support services available to NYC Quakers, and the fostering of opportunities for us to be together as a Quarter. CQL is meeting the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month at 6pm. Each meeting is on Zoom, although we hope to offer one hybrid meeting a quarter. All are welcome.
