Maintenance and Improvements to NYC Quaker Buildings
Facilities projects are improving NYC Quaker spaces. The roof replacement at Brooklyn is finishing up and the fence restoration at Fifteenth St is underway.
This is a regularly recurring update on facilities improvements happening at New York Quarterly Meeting properties. New York Quarterly Meeting, or NYQM, is the organization of NYC Quakers that owns and maintains properties at two sites: downtown Brooklyn, including Brooklyn Meetinghouse; and 15 Rutherford Place in Manhattan, including Fifteenth Street Meetinghouse. The following is based on a conversation with Steve Petry, Director of Facilities and Finances at NYQM.
Fifteenth Street Meeting
Fence restoration: The restoration of the fence around 15 Rutherford Place is progressing. The first section of the fence has been removed and is at the shop being restored. A temporary, protected passage has been created to allow pedestrians to pass (see photos below). The removed fence pieces are now at the shop being sandblasted down to the original metal. Badly damaged parts will be recast. Pins will be inserted into the support rails to strengthen the connections between the pickets and the rails. The pickets were found to be more damaged than anticipated but the increase in work isn’t expected to add to costs or time. The next section of fence on 15th Street will be removed in the next few weeks, and the entire project should take another 8-9 months.
Roof: A contract for the replacement of the roof on the Fifteenth Street complex is about to be signed. The roof will be removed and replaced with a new copper roof. This work will take place over the summer. NYQM is also currently receiving bids to repair the ceiling inside the meetinghouse.
Brooklyn Meeting
Roof: The roof replacement is nearing completion. The weather has turned a corner, and nature is no longer working against us. The roof project should be done by the end of April 2026. The crew has made a lot of progress over the past two weeks (see photos below). We may take advantage of the presence of scaffolding around the building to take care of some small repairs like painting the windowsills and the outside portico. The ceiling inside the meetinghouse will be repaired sometime in May.
