Dear Friends,
We are deeply saddened at the loss of our Friend Larry Weekes, who passed away on June 8th after struggling with complications following throat surgery. Larry was an active attender of the Brooklyn Meeting for many years, offering his remarkable talent as an artist, designer and curator in multiple ways that enriched our lives.
As a member of Brooklyn's Library & History Committee, Larry used his art to bring Quaker history to life with his beautiful multimedia installations exhibited in the Meeting House and in community-based Brooklyn galleries. His narrative series exploring the life of George Fox included drawings and digital animation displayed in 3-dimensional sculptural constructions. Larry developed an ongoing series of mixed media collages for the BMM Library bulletin board. His collage honoring Quaker women can be seen in the library today, and his banner dedicated to Quaker abolition is currently displayed on the meeting house outer fence. Larry also initiated a series of curated art exhibitions in the social hour room.
Larry was born and raised in Harlem, NYC where he attended The Fiorello LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and continued his studies in art and design at New York Community College, the City College of New York, The Art Students League and The School of Visual Arts. Larry often said he was “stirring many pots on the stove.” These included his own art practice and the multiple community-based art projects he curated as director of the Fulton Art Fair, the oldest African American art collective in the city. All of Larry’s work bore witness to both the profound suffering and the monumental contributions of the African American community.
Larry’s “IWE” series of collages and videos explored the energy of the spirit that is within all of us. In Larry’s own words:
“Each of us has a unique reservoir of energy. Our unique energies can combine to create a greater universe of light. There are many paths to the light, many ways of praying, meditating, listening to music, listening to children laugh or sitting in silence. We must find that inner path to find that which brings us joy. We must tap into this reservoir to find peace, joy, and the ability to live in this complicated world.”
