Part 1: A Note for the New Year

As we move further into the new year, we want to take a moment to thank everyone who has joined us in our virtual workshops and community conversations. Your participation, questions, and shared experiences continue to shape these spaces and make them meaningful. We look forward to another year of learning, connection, and support together.

Part 2: Workshop Recap — Navigating Affordable Housing in NYC

Thank you to everyone who joined our recent virtual workshop, Navigating Affordable Housing in NYC, presented by Jennifer Vallone from University Settlement. The session provided an overview of the affordable housing landscape in New York City, including different housing types such as NYCHA, Section 8, Mitchell-Lama, and HDFC cooperatives. We also discussed rent protection programs like SCRIE and DRIE, emergency assistance options, and how to use NYC Housing Connect. We hope this information was helpful in better understanding available housing resources. If you missed the virtual workshop, you can access the slides via this link

if you would like technical support applying for housing or subsidies, please email communitywellness@nycquakers.org

Part 3: Winter Health Tips and Resources

As winter continues, we want to share a few reminders to help you stay healthy and safe. During the winter months, NYC requires landlords to provide heat, with indoor temperatures of at least 68°F during the day (6:00 AM–10:00 PM) when it’s cold outside, and at least 62°F at night (10:00 PM–6:00 AM). Keep your home warm and call 311 if you lose heat or hot water or if your apartment is not adequately heated. Stay active with gentle movement, keep up with recommended vaccinations, and stay connected with others. If you need help accessing winter-related resources, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

If you need assistance with housing, winter safety planning, health resources, other social services, or have questions regarding the housing workshop, you can reach us at communitywellness@nycquakers.org.
